(the only two years it has been awarded)

Jamilah Star also holds the record for the biggest wave ever paddled into by a woman and was the first girl to tow-in to
some of the heaviest big wave spots around the World.

    Jamilah, known as Jam*Star
to her friends, began surfing with her father at age five and never lost the passion for it.
Although she has traveled to over 16 different countries, was the first woman to wrestle in Santa Cruz's Coast Athletic League, was a
    three time Brazillian Ju-Jitsu Champion
and racked up several water polo awards, surfing always remained an integral part of her life.
In 2000 Jam*Star moved to the North Shore, Oahu
where she stunned the locals by not only charging the big wave spots but standing out with huge rides.

    Motivation
hard work and talent keep JamStar at the forefront of women's big wave surfing where she plans to stay.
Her goals are to keep riding huge waves and breaking records, as well as to promote and mentor other women surfer.
In addition she is a professional Vocalist and published writer.

Jam*Star
(Jamilah Star) Started swimming at four mile beach just after age one.
At five he dad gave her, A California Classic Surfboard.
She has been surfing ever since. Inspired by her father, an avid Santa Cruz, cold water surfer, Her Mother, a true angle, and God!

Jamilah Star
a successful big wave rider

Jamilah received The 2004/2005 Billabong XXL Big Wave Award. This was the first year Billabong gave an award to a women.
Of the six photographs nominated for the Monster Women's Award four of them were of Jamilah Star:
One at Sunset, two of Waimea from the cliffs and one at Waimea from the water.
In 2006 JamStar returned to take over and Win the XXL for incredible performance at Waiema and Mavricks
She’s also a surf instructor and an award decorated ocean lifeguard.

Jamilah is the only woman to win
the
CENTRAL AMERICAN LONG BOARD CIRCUIT,
competing against all men.

She made a world record
by charging the largest wave in history
paddled into by a woman
on January 10, 2003 - in Waimea Bay, Hawaii -

Steamers Lane, in Santa Cruz, California
is her home break yet after years leaving in Hawaii she feels just as at home on the North Shore of Oahu.

Recently she began to move to Tahiti and lives in the summers with Mami in Teahupoo.
It provided excellent training for mastering big powerful cold-water waves.

The international venues of Hawaii, Tahiti, Indonesia, Panama, Costa Rica, and Mexico some of Jamilah’s current favorites.

She feels great love for all countries and feels content anywhere as long as there is a ocean with wonderful waves!

ANEHEIM, CA. July, 2005:
"The crowds came out in force to gawk at the year’s biggest waves and the surfers who dare ride them. The Grove Theater in Anaheim was packed to capacity Friday night as the Billabong XXL Awards honored the most courageous of big wave surfers. This year held a special treat for the SLW crew as a women’s paddle-in division was added. Official nominees in contention for the $5,000 prize for biggest wave ridden by a woman included Jamilah Star and Kim Hamrock. Just missing out on official selection was Jenny Useldinger’s Maverick’s bomb caught during her maiden session at the notorious spot."

Winner Jamilah Star
and
Jam*Star's
"all-star"
Jenny Useldinger

"When Jamilah was announced as the women’s winner, she jumped up and down, ran to the stage and stood before the mic breathless. Oddly, Jamiliah’s speech started out subdued and serious. She first commented that she was grateful for the addition of the new category and said that although the women’s waves were small in comparison to the men’s it was just the beginning. She then dedicated her win to her best friend, Beth Pitts a Santa Cruz surfer who died while surfing in 1995. Then Jamilah snapped into classic JamStar mode. She introduced her international all-star team to the crowd and called the members up to the stage – Kim Hamrock and Jenny Useldinger. Together Jamilah led them in a rap about the joys of surfing.

After befuddling the audience with their rap then exiting the stage, host Sal Masakela could only shake his head and comment on the girls’, uh, “passion.”

Jam*Star

"In the Water"
By
Gwen Mickelson,
Santa Cruz Sentinel

"Jamila*Star
shines bright in world of big-wave surfing"

Jam'N
over the top of a 50' footer

"When Santa Cruz native Jamilah Star won the inaugural women’s big-wave award at the recent Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards ceremony, it was history in the making.

For the first time in the three-year run of the big-money contest, mega Aussie surf retailer Billabong recognized women’s big-wave surfing,
awarding a woman known
to challenge
50-foot faces."

"The billing is important because Star, who grew up surfing on the Westside, has accomplished something many surfers, women and men, will only dream about. She’s at the forefront of women’s big-wave surfing, along with a few of her peers, friends and mentors, including Santa Cruz’s Sarah Gerhardt and Jenny Useldinger, and Huntington Beach’s Kim Hamrock.

By e-mail, I caught up with Star, a vibrant, energetic, off-beat, faith-filled juggernaut of a gal who claims to be ageless ("Do Not Believe in ‘Age,’" she wrote). She e-mailed from her pad on the North Shore before she jetted off to Tahiti.

Star, known to her friends as "Jam*Star," has assembled an affiliation of surfers, positive-thinkers and conscientious planet-stewards known as Jam*Team International. She’s training hard for more and bigger waves, and she has been known to paddle out in some of the biggest, most punishing conditions.

"She showed up (on the North Shore) last year (2003) and absolutely shocked everyone," said traveling surf photographer Dave Collyer, who has snapped photos of Star surfing in Hawaii, in an e-mail.

"This woman doesn’t just go out at the big-wave spots, she charges. She doesn’t just get waves. She stands out. That is hard to do on the North Shore; the biggest arena in surfing. Her performances are unprecedented ..."

It seems Star has always been the pioneering type — as a junior at Santa Cruz High School in 1993, she became the first girl to wrestle in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League.

Winning the recent XXL award added wind to her sails and validated the women’s big-wave surfing movement.

"She’s been working on that a long time, and this is the first time they’ve had that ... it’s incredible," said Santa Cruz native and pro surfer Useldinger recently from Los Angeles, where she was surfing, checking in on some sponsors and preparing for a trip to Mexican big-wave hotspot Puerto Escondido. Useldinger is a close friend of Star’s, a fellow nominee for the women’s award and a Jam*Team member who was on the North Shore with Star during the winter.

For Star, Useldinger and others in their group, "there’s no limit — no limits at all," said Useldinger.

I’ll let Star, born Jamilah Istfan Haje, speak for herself — her e-mail style blasts out her personality like a spitting tube.

SURFER MAG

In the Water: How did it feel to win the inaugural Billabong XXL Women’s Award?

Jamilah Star: The funnest time in my life. Just having my dad (Reve), my team and all the radical boys from the WESTSIDE there cheering was like a dream come true. My dad was so excited he picked me up and held me in the air. I felt like Super Girl. When I won, Jenny and Kim (Hamrock) and (others) came up on stage. First I dedicated the award to Beth Pitts, a true hero and the reason I became a pro surfer. (Editor’s note: Santa Cruz surfer Beth Pitts died surfing at Steamer Lane in 1995 at age 19.) That was my most passionate goal in life, to win a contest for her. As I grew up she supported my athleticism, career and heart. She read the Bible to me on the beach and assured me that one day it would all be perfect.

ITW: What is it that draws you to big-wave surfing?

JS: It’s not just a mission but a calling from deep in my heart. I feel at one with the ocean. It is where I can best express my energy and passion for life. I am like a fish or what my family and friends say, "California Sea Lion." After my mom went to heaven, surfing big waves got a lot easier, as if I always have an angel by my side. I never get afraid. If the waves are going to be huge I can feel it in my blood. I dream about waves and swells all the time. Not only ocean waves but I study energy, light and sound waves. Life itself is like a wave, up and down, sometimes crashing, sometimes pulling in, but you always keep riding till that wave takes you to the next level.

"JR Life Guard years"

ITW: What’s next for you?

JS: This is just the beginning!

Now I am the most happy and thankful I ever been! I am training to pull in deep. WOOOOHOOO!"
